A Showroom Helical Staircase Designed for Awe

Renowned high end Italian furniture company, Boffi De Padova opened their new, impressive and distinctive showroom in Chelsea, London in the Spring of 2021. Alpine Group were commissioned by fit out specialists, Zona to design, manufacture and install the helical staircase, the centrepiece of this architecturally stunning location.

Exclusive staircase to match interiors

Alpine Group were recommended to Zona for their high standards and attention to details, assigned with the task of creating and installing a centrepiece helical staircase that would act as a connecting and dominating sculptured feature within the building, reaching between three sprawling floors, which together add up to 900 square metres of showroom. The interior gave the impression of modern living spaces, partitioned into sections to display the furniture and lighting on offer.

The staircase needed to be visually arresting and contemporary, with an industrial feel to match the large windows and anthracite-grey walls. The broad twisting staircase was covered in sheet metal to achieve the desired impression. Transparent glass balustrades to the landings ensured onlookers could appreciate the full length of the metal staircase and its long spiralling steps.

Alpine Group partnered to help with budgets, design and installation and specifically to troubleshoot on a tight deadline. There were several challenges that needed addressing, from Zona cutting out the floor, to the required finish, which Alpine Group tackled with the typical cool and methodical approach required when everything hinges on making critical decisions in limited timeframes.

Samples were selected and sent back and forth in the tight programme and due to late involvement Alpine had to accelerate the design whilst being careful to integrate with the other finishes in the store.

With top end clients, there is always a delicate and balanced mix of practical solutions and essential styling. Aesthetic is so important that there are often additions that are requested by the client in the eleventh hour.

The Boffi De Padova installation proved once again, that a stunning staircase can become the heart of a building and the epitome of a style.

In this case, the client desired an extra level of detail, so the underside of the stairs ended up being clad with hidden connections. The steel treads required stainless steel front nosing strips to be embedded, which had to be laser cut with hidden connections. It was last minute work but it made a subtle difference and the client was delighted with the results. The Boffi De Padova installation proved once again, that a stunning staircase can become the heart of a building and the epitome of a style.
